Voteer offers a powerful Single Member / Multi-Member Election question type, specifically designed for electing individuals to positions such as board members, officers, representatives, or committee roles.
What is a Single Member / Multi-Member Election?
This voting format allows organizers to run formal elections where voters choose one or several candidates from a predefined list. It is ideal for board elections, committee appointments, or any vote requiring the selection of people rather than simple yes/no options.
How to Configure This Question Type
When creating a Single Member or Multi-Member election, the organizer defines the following:
- Question: The title of the question.
- Question Description: Text displayed in a smaller font, useful for providing context, election rules, or additional information.
Specific Rules
- In a single-member election, the voter must select one candidate only.
- In a multi-member election, the organizer sets the minimum and maximum number of candidates that may be selected.
Candidate Selection
Responses are not entered as free text. The organizer directly selects the candidates from the list of eligible voters, taking into account groups (colleges) and the defined rules.
Important: Notion of Eligibility
In Voteer, voters can only vote for eligible persons. Eligibility is managed through the electoral file (voters file).
For the system to function correctly, it is essential to complete the “Eligible” column in your voters file. Only people marked as eligible will appear as possible candidates.

Allow Voting for an Undeclared Candidate
When this option is enabled, voters may vote for an eligible voter within their group, even if that person has not formally declared their candidacy.
Depending on the organization’s statutes, if the bylaws allow it, this feature enables voters to distinguish declared candidates while also allowing them to vote for any eligible voter, even those who have not expressed a desire to be elected.
Note: This is an optional feature. It does not apply to all organizations and must be explicitly activated by the organizer when creating the election

White Vote Management
The White vote option is available and enabled by default for Single Member and Multi-Member Elections.
- The organizer can customize its label (ex: “Abstain”, “No opinion”, “Blank vote”).
- A blank vote is considered a non-expressed vote and is not included in the calculation of results.
- However, the number of blank votes is recorded and available in the reports for reference.
- If the organization wishes blank votes to be included in the results, simply add a specific response labeled “Abstention” to the list of choices
Advanced Parameters (for Single & Multi-Member Elections)
These are the main advanced settings available for this type of vote:
- Secret Ballot: Allows you to make the question secret or open (only possible if the overall scrutiny is not forced to secret).
- Groups: Associate the question to specific electoral colleges / groups of voters.
- Display to Voters: Choose which information is visible to voters:
- Number / % of blank votes
- Number / % of voters
- Number / % of votes cast
- Participation rate
- Display of Results: Define what appears in the results:
- Number of votes (always enabled by default)
- Percentage (% of expressed votes)
- Number of votes
- Associated Publications: Link one or more publications (documents, reports, etc.) directly to the question so they appear alongside it.
What the Voter Sees
Voters benefit from a clean and intuitive interface when participating in Single Member or Multi-Member Elections.
They can see:
- The question title clearly at the top
- A description providing additional context and voting rules
- The list of candidates with checkboxes
- The Abstention option (if enabled)
- Information about selection limits (e.g. “Min: 1 - Max: 2”)
- A progress indicator at the bottom showing remaining selections
The design is simple, responsive, and user-friendly across all devices.
