How to Manage Secret Ballot Voting in Backstage

Table of contents

Voteer gives you full control over whether your votes are secret or open.

This setting is crucial for respecting the confidentiality of your elections.

What is Secret Ballot Voting?

Setting Description
Enabled
(Secret Ballot)
Votes remain strictly anonymous. No one, including organizers, can see who voted what.
Disabled
(Open Vote)
The scrutin becomes open. Organizers can view each voter’s individual choices.

This setting can be defined at two levels:

  • At the scrutin level (applies to all questions)
  • At the individual question level (allows mixed mode: some secret, some open)

How to Manage Secret Ballot Settings

  1. When creating or editing a scrutin, go to the Configuration section.
  2. Find the Secret Ballot option.
  3. Choose:
    • Enabled → Full anonymity (recommended for most elections)
    • Disabled → Open voting

Secret voting can still be enabled individually from the voting options, ideal for combining open votes and secret ballots

You can also adjust this setting for each individual question to create a mixed scrutin.

Where to Find Individual Votes (Open Mode)

If secret ballot is disabled, you can view the individual choices in the Reports section.

The Voter check-in list provides the named list of voters who have voted, question by question. If the vote is open (non-secret), it also shows the choice expressed by each voter.

Important: When the vote is not secret, only the organizer can see the individual votes.

Guarantee of Secrecy

If secret ballot is activated, Voteer guarantees the confidentiality of each voter’s choice by strictly respecting the fundamental principles of electronic voting (anonymity, integrity, and verifiability).
